Four Poems
how to sign the word "listen"
to draw in on one hand
to one ear
two grasping fingers
and a thumb
     §
step by
step the mile
post meaning
less if
behind
is ahead the
fog if all
the power lines go
their way
     §
coming down off
the steppe
the poplars now
cypresses
the grass now
sea
     §
once grew some
with light, rain
and waiting
just to have them
grow hard like
knuckles in
the earth.
